Body mass index (BMI or BMI) is a quick indicator that correlates weight with your height. It is not a perfect method, but it can give you an overview of your body condition and the associated risks:

  • It is easy to calculate and interpret
  • Helps you set realistic weight goals
  • It can be correlated with other health factors (eg: fat percentage, analyzes, lifestyle)
For a complete evaluation, analysis of body composition (fat, muscle mass) is also recommended, but the BMI remains an excellent starting point.

What exactly does it mean?

  • IMC < 18.5→ Possible deficit of fat and muscle mass. Recommended: nutrient-rich diet and exercise for muscle growth.
  • IMC 18.5 — 24.9→ Ideal weight. Maintain an active and balanced lifestyle!
  • IMC 25 -- 29.9→ Transition to overweight. Daily exercise and intermittent fasting can help.
  • BMI > 30→ There is an increased risk of diseases (diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases). Medical consultation is recommended.
Is BMI the same as body fat percentage?

No. The BMI provides a general estimate based only on height and weight. The percentage of body fat is more accurate, but requires special equipment. The ideal is to use both, if you can.

Can I have a “normal” Body Mass Index but still be unhealthy?

Yes! You may have a BMI within normal limits but have too little muscle mass or an unbalanced diet. Therefore, BMI should be correlated with lifestyle, analyzes and level of physical activity.
