The term “nootropic” comes from the ancient Greek (“nous” = mind, “tropos” = direction/guidance)and refers to any compound capable of supporting or improving mental performance.
Nootropics can be naturals(ex: caffeine, ginkgo biloba, L-theanine) or synthetics(ex: racetam, modafinil, methylene blue).
They are used by students, entrepreneurs, athletes and biohacking enthusiasts to gain extra mental energy, clarity and resistance to cognitive stress.
An ideal nootropic should be:
- safe in the long run,
- not to create dependence,
- and support long-term brain health.
However, many of the promoted effects of nootropics are still under study, and effectiveness varies from person to person.
