Refeed is the process of controlled reintroduction of food after a period of fasting or severe caloric restriction. The goal is to replenish glycogen reserves, from reactivate metabolic hormones(such as leptin and T3) and reduces the risk of binge eatingor hormonal imbalances.
An effective refeed emphasizes complex carbohydrates, natural electrolytes and a moderate amount of protein. It is especially important after fasts longer than 24—36 hours and excesses of refined fats and sugars should be avoided.
For frequent intermittent fasting practitioners (OMAD, ADF, 20/4), a weekly or bimonthly refeed can prevent stagnation in weight loss and chronic fatigue.
