Autophagyis a mechanism by which cells break down their spent components to produce energy and prevent the accumulation of toxins.
Intermittent fasting significantly activates this process, contributing to regeneration, longevity and reduction of systemic inflammation.
Autophagy(from Greek: “auto” = self, “phagein” = to eat) is an essential process of cellular self-cleaning by which the body degrades and recycles old, damaged or unnecessary cellular components. This mechanism is activated naturally under conditions of fasting, cellular stress, or lack of nutrients.
Autophagy plays a crucial role in:
- preventing the accumulation of toxins and dysfunctional cells
- delay of the aging process
- reduction of chronic inflammation
- support of immunity and cell regeneration
⏱️ When does autophagy begin?
Autophagy does not start immediately after you stop eating. In general:
- The first signs appear after 12—16 hours of fasting
- the process becomes significantly active between 24 and 36 hours
- reach a peak between 36 and 72 hours, especially in water postures
- after 72 hours, the body enters states of deep regeneration, including stem cell production
🧂 What can inhibit it?
Autophagy is highly sensitive to the intake of:
- protein (even in small quantities)
- amino acids (ex: leucine)
- calories (in general, any food)
Therefore, fasting with wateris considered the most effective method for stimulating autophagy. Drinking water, green tea or unsweetened coffee does not stopautophagy (and even slightly stimulate it).
